At long last a Kiwi has got his mitts on the New Zealand Open trophy. Aucklander Michael Hendry held his nerve to snap a 14-year drought by becoming the first Kiwi to win the tournament since Dunedin's Mahal Pearce.
In a thrilling finish on the 153m par three 18th hole at Arrowtown's Millbrook course on Sunday, Hendry triumphed in a three-way playoff with fellow Kiwi Ben Campbell and Australian Brad Kennedy.
It was familiar and not for Mike who had won the Pro-Am format event twice when it was the NZPGA Championship, this time however the victory was sweeter, being his own national championship.
He has called this his 5th major, he played like a major champion, only missing a handful of greens in the entire 73 holes he played.
Well done Mike!
