Travel Tips: Houston TX

Houston is The United States 4th most populous city, this sprawling metropolis is the oil capitol of the USA. People are very friendly and keen to ensure you have a great time in the Lonestar state. The city was named after former General Sam Houston, who was president of the Republic of Texas and had commanded and won at the Battle of San Jacinto 25 miles (40 km) east of where the city was established.

Weather: Being in the deep south, you need to time your visit well as the heat can be oppressive. However once you avoid June, July and August the climate is very friendly.

Stay: Downtown has some classy hotels and eateries. The St Regis is a very nice property in the central city. The glamour area is The Woodlands, an upmarket neighborhood north of the central city featuring a large resort, some excellent golf courses, shopping and dining to your hearts content.

Golf: Play at The Golf Club Of Houston, home to the Houston Open, this course is world class with wonderful par 3's and huge par 5's. The TPC at Woodlands is a former PGA Tour venue, well worth the visit. For a more relaxing day out try Tour 18, a tribute course, with replicas of many of the USA's most famous holes, including the 17th at Sawgrass Augusta National's Amen corner.

Eat: A fun place in the city is The Conservatory, a food collective built in what looks like an old basement. They have 4 different types of food including Texas BBQ and a craft beer outlet which has at least 50 beers on tap which change out regularly. For a taste of Mexican try El Tiempo Cantina, just south of the city for some real authentic south of the border food.

Do: If your timing is right a Houston Astros game is great fun, the stadium is right in the center of town. Local bars overflow with loyal fans.

One thing that's unique to the Astros is singing "deep in the heart of Texas" during the 7th innings stretch, right after "take me out to the ballgame"- which as the locals would say "is a hoot".
